Stage 8: igus:bike in Gdynia – a city of modernity and maritime climate

Anna Kielar | 21. August 2025

After a presentation of Gdańsk – the largest city in Pomerania – we set off for Gdynia. This young port city has a unique energy: it combines maritime tradition, modern architecture, and a unique seaside atmosphere, creating a space that inspires both residents and visitors.

MPL Techma – world-class automation

The first stop was a visit to MPL Techma – Poland’s largest manufacturer of warehouse automation systems. The company has been collaborating with igus for over 10 years, incorporating our solutions into its systems and proving that Polish engineering can compete internationally. A tour of the facility demonstrated how close collaboration and continuous exchange of experiences drive innovation in logistics and automation.

A postcard from the Baltic Sea

The next stop was a stroll along the Orłowo Pier – one of the most charming spots on the Tricity map. The wooden pier jutting out into the sea, the view of the Orłowo Cliff, and the sound of the waves create an atmosphere that has inspired painters, photographers, and walkers for years. It’s a place where you can pause for a moment.

A meeting with history

At the heart of the port stands the ORP Błyskawica – the oldest surviving destroyer in the world, now a museum. A symbol of Polish naval history. A tour of the deck and engine room allows one to almost experience the atmosphere of service at sea.

A journey into the depths of the ocean and the story of a young city

A visit to the MIR Gdynia Aquarium was like immersing yourself in another world. Exotic fish, colorful coral reefs, and fascinating Baltic species awaited the exhibits. It’s a place of education and science, where marine biology becomes accessible to every visitor—children and adults alike. Next up was a visit to the Gdynia City Museum, a reminder that although Gdynia is relatively young, its history is incredibly dynamic. Within a few decades, it grew from a small fishing village into one of Europe’s most important port cities.

The sound of waves on the promenade

We ended the day with a stroll along Feliks Nowowiejski Boulevard – a vibrant promenade stretching along the coast. With the sea and beach on one side and the modern city center of Gdynia on the other, it’s the perfect place to soak up the city’s atmosphere and see how residents combine everyday life with the charm of the seaside.

The Sea, Modernism and Navigation

Gdynia is a seaside city brimming with energy – modern, yet close to nature. A stroll along the boulevard, the view from Orłowski Cliff, and the bustling Kościuszko Square ensure there’s something for everyone. It’s the perfect place to combine relaxation with exploring history and a maritime atmosphere.

So you were cycling 500 meters from my dad's house on Gdynia Dąbrowa, around 500 meters from my secondary school (that was orignally a summer residence of one of polish queens), and around 50 meters from a swimming pool where I was doing my km every thursday as a teenager. I absolutely agree that Gdynia was a top choice for that trip!
