Stage 7: Graz – Rising high – with the igus:bike up to Graz’s Clock Tower

Michael Poepke | 18. July 2025

Stage 7 of the igus:bike Tour Austria takes us to Graz – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, design capital, and city of contrasts. From baroque palaces to futuristic islands, Andreas Kniebeiß, Sales Director for drytech® plain bearings, explores the city on two sustainable wheels. Riding the nearly maintenance-free, lightweight igus:bike gives him a unique, quiet perspective on the streets and stories of one of Austria’s most vibrant cities.

Royal Beginnings: Schloss Eggenberg

Our tour begins west of the city center at Schloss Eggenberg, Graz’s grandest palace. Built in the 17th century with astronomical symbolism and lavish décor, the estate blends late Renaissance grandeur with baroque finesse. Surrounded by peacocks and manicured gardens, it’s a serene launch point steeped in imperial history.

Art in Motion: Kunsthaus Graz & Murinsel

We roll toward the Kunsthaus Graz, also known as the “Friendly Alien.” With its blob-like blue form and BIX media façade, this architectural icon represents Graz’s modern, creative pulse. Just across the river lies the Murinsel – a floating steel-and-glass island shaped like a seashell. Half pedestrian bridge, half amphitheater and café, it connects both banks and eras of Graz with futuristic flair.

City Views: Schlossbergplatz & Hauptplatz

From the river, the route leads to Schlossbergplatz — the plaza at the foot of the famous Schlossberg hill. It’s the gateway to higher ground and a beloved gathering point for locals and visitors alike.
Not far away, we arrive at Hauptplatz, Graz’s lively main square framed by colorful facades and the grand city hall. The tram lines, cafés, and fountains here reflect Graz’s energy — past and present in motion.

Old World Charm: Graz Old Town

Winding deeper into the historic center, Andreas explores the cobbled streets and hidden courtyards of Graz’s Old Town. With Renaissance arcades, pastel-colored facades, and Gothic details, this UNESCO-listed area feels like a journey through time — where every corner reveals another layer of the city’s identity.

Symbols of Power: Graz Landhaus & Herrengasse

Continuing down the prestigious Herrengasse, we pass elegant storefronts and ornate buildings. At its heart stands the Graz Landhaus — a Renaissance jewel with its iconic arcaded courtyard. Today, it houses the Styrian Parliament and remains a proud symbol of regional self-determination and architectural beauty.

Spiritual Landmark: Domkirche

Before heading uphill, a moment of calm awaits at the Graz Cathedral (Domkirche). Commissioned by Emperor Frederick III, its Gothic lines and high vaults offer quiet reflection — a place where history and reverence meet under one soaring roof.

Final Ascent: The Uhrturm on Schlossberg

The tour ends with a climb up the Schlossberg, the green hill that crowns Graz. At its summit stands the Uhrturm — the city’s famous medieval clock tower, known for its reversed hands and panoramic views. It’s a timeless symbol of Graz and the perfect reward after a ride rich in culture and discovery.

Conclusion: A Ride Through Centuries

Stage 7 of the igus:bike Tour reveals Graz as a place where art, power, and perspective come together. For Andreas Kniebeiß, the igus:bike offered more than mobility — it opened a quiet, reflective path through the rhythm of a city in motion.
