Stage 6: From SUMO UK to the Streets of York
Erin Powell | 26. September 2025
Today was an unusual mixture of heavy-duty components in agriculture and the historical streets of York. We began the day with a visit to SUMO UK, a leader in agricultural machinery, before heading into the heart of York, one of Britain’s most historical cities.
Starting strong at SUMO UK
Our morning began at SUMO UK Ltd, based near York. Known for their British-built cultivation and seeding machinery, their equipment is designed to reduce input costs and improve yields, all while protecting vital natural resources. Sumo UK Ltd use igutex® bearings from igus in their tilling equipment for its impressive load-bearing ability and lasting operation.

Rolling into York
After leaving SUMO, we cycled into York, a city where every corner tells a story. With its Roman roots, medieval architecture, and industrial legacy, York offered the perfect backdrop for the igus:bike to shine.
Here are some of the highlights from our ride:
York Minster
One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, York Minster has stood for centuries as a symbol of architectural brilliance. Its intricate stonework and stained-glass windows are feats of medieval engineering, and the building’s foundations date back to the 7th century. We even saw some gargoyle carvings in a construction area that were being prepared to be replaced, seeing the detail of these reminds you just how much work goes into architecture on this scale.

Clifford’s Tower
Originally built by William the Conqueror in 1086, Clifford’s Tower is all that remains of York Castle. It has served as a royal stronghold, prison, and treasury. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the city and a glimpse into Norman military engineering…maybe a touch to steep to cycle up!
The Shambles
This narrow, cobbled street is one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. Once home to butchers and meat vendors, its overhanging timber-framed buildings are a testament to early urban design and construction techniques and it is said that The Shambles were a great source of inspiration for J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise, with a shop dedicated to the series boasting queues down the street!

York City walls
Dating back to Roman times, the York City Walls are the most complete set of medieval walls in England. Walking or cycling along them offers a unique perspective on the city’s defensive engineering and urban planning, overlooking much of the city to make the perfect vantage point.
Our Rider
Sam Newton
Sam joined igus in 2023 as an igutex product specialist, supporting customers with their heavy-duty applications. Outside of work, he loves food and films. This combination leads to a less than active lifestyle, so the opportunity to do a stint on the igus bike presented a personal challenge. The last bike he rode had training wheels! Nevertheless, putting in a few miles for igus was a welcome personal challenge to rise to.
