Stage 4: Pedalling through the peaks

Erin Powell | 24. September 2025

After three busy days of customer visits and an editor drop-in, Day 4 of the tour gave us the perfect opportunity to regroup and recharge while keeping up momentum in one of the UK’s most stunning locations: the Monsal Trail in the stunning Peak District.

From rolling hills to winding paths, the day brought together breath-taking scenery with a smooth trail and still made space for stunning feats of engineering and architecture seen in the retired railway tunnels along the route

The trail is 8.5 miles long, and follows the former Manchester to London Midland Railway line, closed in the late 1960s. Stretching at its furthest points between Blackwell Mill in Chee Dale and Coombs Road in Bakewell, it’s a must-see location.

Lunch with a View

Midway through the ride, we came to a stop for a well-earned lunch break at Hassops station café and gave ourselves some time to delve deeper into the history of the area.

The area has been inhabited since the Mesolithic era, with archaeological evidence of Bronze Age settlements, Roman roads, and Norman castles and its dramatic landscapes were shaped over 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous period!

During the Industrial Revolution, the Peak District became a hub for lead mining, cotton spinning, and quarrying. The arrival of the railways in the 19th century opened the region to tourism, drawing visitors to its spa towns, show caves, and scenic trails.

Locals along the route stopped to ask questions, intrigued by the design of the igus: bike. Conversations sparked around sustainability, engineering, and the future of mobility; exactly the kind of engagement this tour was built to encourage.

Tomorrow, the tour continues in the exciting city of Liverpool, back to the hustle and bustle of city life!
