Stage 3 – Pedals, Private Estates & Pouring Rain: A Day in Welshpool

Erin Powell | 23. September 2025

Set against the backdrop of the rolling Welsh countryside, today’s adventure took us to the quaint town of Welshpool—a place rich in charm, history, and more than a little rain. We kicked things off with a morning bike ride, weaving through quiet streets and scenic lanes to get a feel for the town. The fresh air and gentle hills made for a perfect start, and before long, we were heading toward Llanerchydol Park, eager to explore its green spaces.

But as often happens on these kinds of journeys, a spontaneous detour led us to something unexpected: Llanerchydol Hall. Nestled among trees and tucked away like a secret, the building looked like something straight out of a period drama. Intrigued, we cycled closer, only to discover—somewhat awkwardly—that we’d wandered onto private property! A kind gentleman emerged to let us know the hall is no longer open to the public, though it is occasionally hired out for filming. With a few laughs and a quick retreat, we continued on our way, chalking it up as one of those memorable travel moments you don’t plan for.

By the time we made it back into town, we’d clocked up over 9 kilometres and were thoroughly drenched by the classic British (and Welsh) weather. Still, spirits were high. Welshpool’s character shone through the drizzle, especially in its celebration of railway heritage. The town boasts three train stations and a deep-rooted connection to the railways, which is reflected in its monuments, murals, and even the painted walkways that guide you through its streets.

Joining us for the ride was Jake, a student and former intern who made the journey from Aberystwyth University for the day. His energy and enthusiasm added a great vibe to the outing, and it was brilliant to have someone so passionate about exploring new places.

All in all, Welshpool offered a perfect mix of history, nature, and unexpected encounters. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why exploring by bike is such a rewarding way to travel—even if you end up soaked to the bone!

Bonjour au grand-père de Jake ! C'est un homme formidable et nous avons eu beaucoup de chance de l'avoir avec nous pendant la tournée. (Hello to Jakes grandfather! He is a great guy and we were very lucky to have him join us on the tour)
