Stage 3: From Trabucador Beach to the hidden desert of the Ebro Delta

Laura Casas | 21. May 2025

Today, we started the route at Trabucador Beach, a 6.5 km stretch of fine golden sand in the Ebro Delta National Park, a large wetland located in the southern part of Catalonia. Why here? Keep reading!

It’s totally normal to wonder why we chose to start here, since on the map, it looks like a place far from everything. Well, this beach has something pretty special: one side looks out to the Mediterranean Sea, while the other faces the Alfacs Bay. How cool is that? No need to wake up early to claim a spot by the sea here — there’s plenty space for everyone! 🏖️

After riding along this sandy stretch — usually surrounded by with paddle surfers and windsurfers, and well known by couples for its stunning sunsets — we left Trabucador Beach behind and headed into rice fields, the area’s signature crop.

As we made our way through the fields, native birds flew above us, joining us on the journey. And here’s the thing: another highlight of this national park is that it’s a paradise for bird lovers! Flamingos, Herons, Avocets… Up to 96 species of birds can be found here! The park is full of birdwatching spots, perfect for observing them in their natural habitat.

We leaved the wildest part to recharge in Deltebre, the town located at the heart of this region. We would need that energy for the final stretch: crossing the Fangar dunes to reach the Fangar lighthouse (yes, that tiny white and red column rising from the sand in the photo below on the right).

Going through the Fangar dunes feels like stepping into a desert—no buildings, just endless sand and the lighthouse shimmering like a mirage. (If you prefer, you can also ride along the shore. It’s less dramatic, but definitely more practical on a bike 💡).

It may have been the ‘easy’ way, but it wasn’t a breeze. Riding through wet sand with water splashing on our feet was far from comfortable, but…

we made it!! Sand, salt water, sun, wind…. Nothing has been able to stop the igus:bike — or our fearless rider Geno! 💪🏻. After this adventure, we’ve definitely earned some chill time on the beach, enjoy the views, and relax. See you tomorrow!

“I’m Geno and I’ve been working at igus Spain for 11 years. Although I started in the Accounting Department, marketing soon knocked on my door and I took the leap. I’m in charge of content so I spend my days between videos, images and texts.

I am passionate about sports and although I was once a mountain biker, now I dedicate my time to other sports. I’m glad to have the opportunity to be part of this adventure!”
