Stage 2: Exploring the Heart of Brussels

Maria Siopi | 12. September 2025

Igus continues its 60th-anniversary journey with the igus:bike, this time cycling through the vibrant city of Brussels. A day packed with culture, history, and iconic landmarks awaited us as we explored the Belgian capital.

Our day began at Mont des Arts (Kunstberg), a cultural hub offering stunning views over Brussels. Surrounded by museums, gardens, and historic buildings, this elevated area perfectly captures the artistic and architectural charm of the city. It was the ideal starting point to immerse ourselves in Brussels’ rich cultural landscape.

From there, we pedaled to the Grand Place, the bustling heart of Brussels. Known for its ornate guild houses and the magnificent Town Hall, the Grand Place is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a showcase of Brussels’ historic grandeur. The square buzzed with energy, making it a perfect spot to capture the atmosphere of the city.

No visit to Brussels is complete without stopping by Manneken Pis, the famous little statue of a boy. This quirky and beloved landmark never fails to amuse visitors and is a symbol of the city’s humor and character.

Next, we cycled to the iconic Atomium, a striking building representing an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. The Atomium is not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of innovation and progress, perfectly aligning with the spirit of Igus as we celebrate our 60th anniversary.

After visiting these landmarks, we headed to our first customer meeting of the day at MCS Control. Here, we had the opportunity to meet our customers in person, learn about their operations, and thank them for their continued collaboration—a highlight of the tour and an important reminder of the partnerships that make Igus’ journey possible.

From igus:bike pedals to industrial pedals at Mobile Control Systems: 15 years of trust
The world tour of the igus:bike celebrates igus’ 60th anniversary and shows how recycled plastic solutions contribute to sustainable mobility and industry. In Belgium, Mobile Control Systems (M.C.S.) is the second customer to be visited. A great opportunity to reflect on a collaboration that has been going strong for more than fifteen years.

From Brussels to global impact
Founded in Brussels, Mobile Control Systems has been developing and manufacturing electronic accelerator pedals (and previously also pneumatic and hydraulic ones) and transmission controls for both on-highway and off-highway vehicles for over 40 years. The company also makes programmable Hall-effect throttle controllers and sensors. Each year, it produces around 100,000 components, spread across factories in Belgium, the United States, and China.

What all the products have in common is a focus on customization, long-term reliability, and safety. Customers come with specific requests, and the engineering team provides solutions that perfectly match their needs. “Our customers rely on solutions that continue to perform under extreme conditions. That is our calling card. igus helps us with this,” says Benjamin Decoster, managing director at Mobile Control Systems.

Plain bearings that last
In most of Mobile Control Systems’ pedals, there’s a small but essential component: a plain bearing. For more than fifteen years, the company has used igus plain bearings for this purpose. The choice is deliberate: the products are robust and, when they wear, only produce plastic dust instead of rust or metal particles. In terms of sustainability, both companies are also well aligned. Mobile Control Systems uses recycled plastics where possible, focuses on local production, and reports transparently on CO₂ emissions each year. igus supports this ambition with sustainable materials.

The combination of long service life, fast delivery, and attractive pricing means that Mobile Control Systems has never had to look elsewhere. “The parts can withstand up to ten million cycles, and we have never received a pedal back with a defective plain bearing. If you are one hundred percent satisfied with a product, you don’t go looking elsewhere. igus responds quickly, delivers quality, and thinks along with us—that is exactly what we need,” adds Jérôme Lejoly, product development engineer at Mobile Control Systems.

Day 2 in Brussels perfectly combined history, culture, innovation, and meaningful customer engagement, continuing the exciting journey of the Igus Bike Tour. Tomorrow promises even more memorable destinations and encounters.
