Stage 11: From Zumaia to San Sebastián — our Spanish adventure ends here
Laura Casas | 2. June 2025
The day has come: it’s the final stage of our unforgettable adventure. And we couldn’t imagine a better way to end than soaking up the surf vibes all the way to the beautiful San Sebastián. So much blue, so much green, and a lot of excitement. Would you join us one last time?
Our last stage began in Zumaia, a charming coastal town famous for its stunning cliffs and popular surfing beaches.
The first stop was Tekniker, a technology center specialized in advance manufacturing, surface engineering and materials, and ICT for production.
Tekniker has a strong commitment to sustainability. In fact, it has developed its own Smart and Sustainable Industry Model, Tekniker SustaINDustry, which aims to help industrial companies identify the key aspects needed to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability. ♻
For example, the technology center has recently innovated in the development of recyclable wind turbine blades by using reprocessable and repairable thermoset resins.
After an interesting tour of their facilities, some of their employee happily gave our igus:bike a try.

Next up, we visited some of Zumaia’s beaches and coastal viewpoints. Yes, those tiny dots you see in the photo below are amateur surfers and enthusiastic begginers, excited to catch some waves (though being their first day, they might not have that much fun yet!). 🏄
Then, we rode by some traditional buildings like chapels and churches, and also spent some time exploring the town — always following the traffic signs, of course!

We left Zumaia and headed to Getaria, a coastal town located further east. To get there, we enjoyed a beautiful ride with stunning views of the sea and lush green hills. After a few kilometers, colorful little houses appeared on the horizon… and just like that, we arrived in Getaria.
We strolled through the town and its old quarter, which still keeps its medieval charm with narrow cobblestone streets, and stopped by a few small squares where we could feel the town’s fishing past.

We kept exploring and arrived at the port, where we came across some fishing nets — which reminded us that the igus:bike is made from 50% recycled nets. Amazing how something so traditional can be used to create such an innovative vehicle, right? 🎣

Next, we made our way to Zarautz, a lively town also known for its surfing scene. There, we rode along the seaside promenade and reached the beach, where we found a shaded viewpoint — though you might need to find the exact position to avoid the sun!
We also passed by one of the restaurants owned by the famous Basque chef Karlos Arguiñano.

We said goodbye to Zarautz and set off for our final destination: San Sebastián (or Donostia in Basque language). This city is world-famous for the San Sebastián International Film Festival, which has welcomed stars like Johnny Depp, Harrisson Ford and Carlos Bardem.
But that’s not the only thing it’s known for. It offers beautiful beaches, with La Concha (shown in the photo below) being the most famous, top-rated restaurants — the city has the highest number of Michelin stars in the world — and a stylish, relaxed lifestyle with plenty of outdoor living thanks to its surrounding nature.
It also houses the Monte Igueldo Amusement Park, located at the top of the Monte Igueldo, offering a unique mix of classic rides and spectacular views of San Sebastián.

Finally, we went to one of the city’s most iconic spots: Peine del Viento, a set of three steel sculptures that looks like a comb, located right by the sea. Sometimes getting here can be risky because of the big waves, and you never know if you’ll actually get to see the place until you’re close. But today, the weather was just perfect.

We chose this spot to said goodbye because, even sometimes we didn’t know what was going to happen, it was always worth the risk and keep pedaling.
But the true star of this adventure isn’t us, but the igus:bike. She’s been with us for over 200 kilometers across Spain, from north to south and east to west. We discovered (or rediscovered) beautiful cities and breathtaking landscapes, met amazing people, and savored incredible food.
All thanks to this faithful companion, who carried us over roads, sand, grass, and dirt — without a single drop of lubricant or a single complaint!
Today, our Spanish tour comes to THE END. We hope you enjoyed it and got to know this beautiful country. Thanks for joining us — we loved every moment! Spain awaits you anytime! 🤗
