Stage 1: A Festive Start in Antwerp

To celebrate igus’ 60th anniversary, the igus:bike is traveling around the world to visit special places and put our customers in the spotlight. Today, we kicked off in Belgium with a day full of culture, history, and, of course, plenty of cycling fun in the beautiful city of Antwerp.
Our day began at Het Steen, an iconic castle on the banks of the Scheldt River and one of Antwerp’s oldest buildings. Originally a medieval fortress, later a prison, and now a popular tourist attraction, Het Steen brought history to life and provided a stunning starting point for our tour.
From there, we cycled to the Grote Markt of Antwerp, the vibrant heart of the city. Surrounded by beautiful guild houses and the majestic City Hall, the Grote Markt is the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere of Antwerp. The City Hall, built in Renaissance style, tells the story of a city that has played an important role in trade and culture for centuries.
Next, we visited the Cathedral, one of Belgium’s most beautiful Gothic cathedrals. With its towering spire and impressive artworks, including paintings by the famous artist Peter Paul Rubens, the cathedral is not only a religious landmark but also a cultural icon of Antwerp.
A short ride later, we continued toward the Parkbrug, passing the MAS Museum and the historic Eilandje district along the way. The MAS, or Museum aan de Stroom, is an architectural masterpiece that tells the story of Antwerp as a major port. The Eilandje neighborhood itself is a charming area where old and new blend beautifully.
We continued our tour to our first customer visit: the Antwerp Euroterminal (AET). Here, we had the opportunity to meet our customers in person and thank them for their collaboration—a meaningful moment during this anniversary tour.
This concluded our first day, full of impressions from rich history, modern architecture, and valuable customer encounters. A perfect start to the Igus Bike Tour, which promises many more exciting locations and meetings in the coming days.
Eerste halte in België: igus:bike bezoekt Antwerp Euroterminal – waar innovatie en logistiek samenkomen
Ter ere van het 60-jarig bestaan van igus reist de igus:bike een jaar lang door zestien landen. De fiets, gemaakt van gerecyclede kunststoffen, laat overal zien hoe circulaire economie in de praktijk kan werken. In België werd de eerste stop gemaakt bij Antwerp Euroterminal (AET), Europa’s grootste multipurpose terminal en een vaste partner van igus.
Duidelijke circulaire visie
Wie Antwerpen zegt, denkt aan haar bruisende haven. Daar, op een terrein van maar liefst 150 hectare, verwerkt AET werkelijk alles: containers, zware ladingen, stukgoed en zelfs projectcargo. De terminal beschikt daarnaast over een indrukwekkende parkeergarage met plaats voor 22.000 auto’s, de grootste van Europa.
Duurzaamheid is een rode draad in de activiteiten in AET. Zonnepanelen op de parkeergarage en windmolens op de terminal zorgen ervoor dat de terminal voor 90% off grid opereert. Regenwater wordt ingezet om voertuigen en containers te reinigen en met walstroomprojecten wil AET schepen een groen alternatief bieden voor zware brandstoffen. Het bezoek van de igus:bike past perfect in die visie: innovatieve oplossingen inzetten om circulair te werken en zo de mobiliteit en logistiek van morgen te ondersteunen.
Decennia lang vertrouwen
Dat igus een vertrouwde naam is in de Antwerpse haven, blijkt meteen uit de woorden van Franky Schittekat, Supervisor bij AET: “Ik loop hier al twintig jaar rond en ik heb nooit anders geweten dan dat er igus-oplossingen voor onze containerkranen gebruikt worden. Waarom we telkens weer voor igus kiezen? De producten zijn robuust en betrouwbaar, en zijn bovendien snel leverbaar.”
Het meest recente gezamenlijke project draaide rond de vernieuwing van de energiekettingen van twee ship-to-shore-containerkranen. De vorige kettingen, eveneens van igus, hadden na jaren trouwe dienst hun levensduur bereikt. Dankzij duidelijke afspraken en een nauwe samenwerking tussen de technische dienst, de kraandienst en het igus-team kon het project vlot worden afgerond. “Als een product jarenlang zonder problemen meegaat, weet je dat je de juiste partner hebt”, vertelt James Deignan, Terminal Manager bij AET.
Die combinatie van kwaliteit, service en beschikbaarheid maakt igus voor AET een vanzelfsprekende partner.
