Nature highlight at the top of Germany

spappers | 8. November 2024

Today, we have the whole day to enjoy some touristic activities. We decided to continue our way to Grainau, a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, deep in the south of Germany and right at the border to Austria. Why? Grainau is home to the beautiful Eibsee. The lake is famous for it’s crystal clear water and is a natural idyll for both relaxing and being active.

The weather… well, wasn’t exactly what we hoped for: 4°C and fog. A lot of fog. But we quickly learned that this doesn’t detract from the beautiful landscape. And there was another thing to be excited for: The Eibsee is located at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain at 2,962 m above sea level, which we could already see behind the clouds.

So, we started the igus:bike route on the eastern side of the Eibsee and cycled clockwise on the Eibsee circular trail. We cycled along forest paths, saw small neighboring lakes such as the Frillensee, and even found a small beach. However, as the weather was not ideal for sunbathing today, we kept going for another few kilometers 😉

We found a very nice viewpoint and took the opportunity to take a quick lunch break while enjoying the beautiful view of the lake. Once we continued our way, the sun finally decided to come out – and we even met some curious passers-by 😉

After 7 km we reached the end of our route and were rewarded with a beautiful, sunny view of the Zugspitze. Our plan was to take the cable car to the top of the mountain, but sadly, this was not possible because of maintenance work. Nonetheless, we had a beautiful day!
