Last stop in Germany at the North Sea

spappers | 20. November 2024

The time has come: Today, is our final stage of the igus:bike tour in Germany. Since the idea of the igus:bike was born “by the sea“ by our CEO Frank Blase, we figured we should also end the tour at the sea. That’s why we make a final trip to East Frisia. More precisely, Greetsiel, a village located directly on the Leybucht, a small bay on the East Frisian west coast.

We started off the day with a nice breakfast and warm coffee in our hotel before going outside. And surprise: We were greeted with snow! With no more than 1°C, we first had to clear the snow from our van – and then we made our way to the centre of Greetsiel to start todays circular bike route of 26 km.

Greetsiel is a port town known for its seafood restaurants, traditional fishing boats, and 18th-century brick homes and is also part of the national park Wadden Sea, an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea. We cycled through green meadows, before reaching the dyke at the shore. Along the way, we pass sights such as the red and yellow-striped Pilsum lighthouse. Fun fact: It is one of East Frisia’s most famous landmarks, mainly because of its appearance in the film “Otto – Der Außerfriesische” by Otto Waalkes, a German comedian and actor and also East Frisia’s most famous person.

We continue our way until we reach the lookout at Greetsieler port. And just in time for the end of our stage, the sun finally comes out as well. Perfect timing for one last picture of the igus:bike in front of a fishing boat. And thus, going back to the roots of the igus:bike, which is made from old, recycled fishing nets to promote the circular economy for plastics.

Now it’s time for us to say goodbye to the igus:bike, which is on its way to the next stop: Singapore. Stay tuned for new, exciting stories!
