Why is thermal management becoming more and more significant for the automobile industry?

Sebastian Bloechl | 2. April 2020

Cosy heating in the winter and an air-conditioned living room in the summer – in addition to such everyday concerns, thermal management plays a decisive role in the automotive industry. In that industry, for instance, it is the engine that meets various scenarios. At first, it needs a temperature rise that is as quick as possible, while in full operation it strives to cool the vehicle.

Both internal combustion energies and alternative drive concepts pursue the same goal: optimum heat balance. Only then can the vehicle move with maximum efficiency. If the engine and battery are optimally cooled at all times, range is optimised and emissions reduced. Another concern is enhancing interior comfort so that it is warmed in winter and cooled in summer.

iglidur plain bearings and xiros ball bearings in thermal management systems:

Coolant pumps & coolant controllers
Responsible for the circulation of coolant in the vehicle. High rotational speeds are not at all rare, so the use of the right plain bearing and material is especially important. A large number of iglidur materials offer great chemical resistance – to glycol-water mixtures, for example. They are also cost-effective, especially compared to the ceramic or graphite-carbon bearings that are often used. Find out more here.

Active grille shutter & active grille roller
Airstream cooling and quick heating during starting. More and more frequently, automated shutter and roller systems are used to accomplish this, especially in e-vehicles. The dirt resistance and elimination of additional lubrication provided by iglidur polymer bearings and xiros plastic ball bearings are especially important here. Find out more here.
