Cost-effective plain bearings in electric coolant pumps and regulators

Sebastian Bloechl | 9. April 2020

The demand for electric water pumps is huge. In addition to the cooling of motors and drives, air conditioning is also one of its tasks. The advantages of electric coolant pumps compared to conventional mechanical water pumps are their independence from the combustion engine. In this way, the electric pumps can be switched on and off as required during vehicle operation, saving energy and increasing efficiency, effectiveness and reducing emissions.

Alternative drive concepts such as electric vehicles in particular are facing a major challenge in this area. Here, the battery has to be cooled on the one hand, and on the other hand it is also responsible for air conditioning and heating the interior. Therefore, the thermal management and the systems it contains, such as coolant pumps and controllers, must be optimally coordinated in order to run with maximum efficiency. This is directly related to the range of the vehicle. Find out more here.

iglidur® plain bearings in coolant pumps, regulators and valves:

Among other things, the bearings used within the systems are responsible for a high degree of efficiency and reliability. The following points should be considered when selecting a suitable plain bearing.

Coolant pumps / Water pumps

While the cooling pump delivers the required amount of coolant inside the vehicle, rotational speeds of over 1-2 m/s are often reached. In order to achieve these high revolutions, it is very important that the medium and a predominant hydrodynamics flow through the bearings. For this purpose, the bearings can be designed with radial and axial grooves. iglidur® plain bearings offer infinite freedom of shape:

Cooling water regulator / Multi-way valves

A large number of regulators and valves guide the coolant reliably inside the vehicle. Here there is also frequent contact with the used glycol-water mixture as well as high temperatures, therefore the suitable iglidur® plain bearings also offer a high temperature resistance in addition to a high chemical resistance. Furthermore the igus® polymer plain bearings offer a cost advantage compared to the frequently used ceramic or graphite-carbon bearings. Reduce costs with iglidur® plain bearings – Learn more here.

We would be happy to show you further advantages of our polymer plain bearings.
