Motor control via web server – how does that work?

Adriana Glazer | 16. April 2020

igus is known for offering the simplest possible solutions for your challenges. We have also tried this with control technology. No complicated (expensive) connection cable, no special protocol, no software. A motor control system via the web server. But what does that actually mean? We will address these questions in the next few lines.

What is the dryve D1 motor control system?

If you don’t know yet, the dryve D1 control system is THE control system for stepper, DC, and EC/BLDC motors. The web-based control system is designed in such a way that customers can control their existing motors in the same way as the igus motors.  You can read more about the control system in this blog post:

No software required: web-based motor control system

A web server is used to transfer data to clients such as a web browser. A web server is the computer with web server software or just the web server software itself. In our case the dryve D1 motor control system. The “software” required to configure the D1 therefore works directly on the dryve D1. This means that no software has to be installed on your computer to configure the control system. Just a current web browser which is installed anyway on every conventional computer. So, no problems with the IT department because the rules are once again too strict for the programmer. Faster commissioning, less effort.

Little tip

Additionally you can utilise the advantages of the web browsers. Zooming, creating PDFs, downloading and uploading configurations or simply researching the Internet manuals in parallel. If it has to be quick, a huge advantage.

Physically, the connection is established via a conventional Ethernet cable. RJ45 on both sides. Plug it in. Read out the IP address and enter it in the browser. Works. This also works in connection with a WLAN router to use mobile devices or via switch with several control systems.

The IP address is assigned dynamically. So it adapts to your computer. To find out the IP address, see the following video.

This is how the D1 IP address is displayed

Important points to note when connecting the dryve D1 for the first time

  • Use a current HTML5 capable web browser
  • Use a standard Ethernet network cable (not a crossover cable)
  • To exclude disturbances, it is best not to have an Internet connection
