The first stage in Cologne with spontaneous company

Michael Thelen | 16. October 2024

Yesterday marked the start of our big world tour with the igus:bike. We started at our headquarters in Cologne Porz-Lind, more precisely in the new Hall 8, where the plastic bicycle is developed, tested and assembled. Together with selected journalists, we counted down and cheered on our rider Melanie on the first meters of the igus:bike world tour.

On the first stage there was a very spontaneous companion for Melanie. A journalist from a TV station was so impressed by our starting signal that he joined us on another igus:bike at short notice. From the igus headquarters, we first went along the Rhine to Cologne Cathedral. After a short refreshment, we continued to the RheinKrake and met Fabian Heinisch, the project manager of K.R.A.K.E. e.V. there.

That was the first day and the first stage of our world tour, with the first 28 km. Stay tuned, because the next stage takes us through a heath and nature reserve and to a customer who develops control systems for valves …

More about the RheinKrake

The RheinKrake is a stationary waste trap that passively collects waste from the Rhine. igus supports the project and uses the plastic waste for the production of the igus:bike, among other things. Fabian Heinisch, project manager of the RheinKrake, gives further insights into the exciting project in an interview and answers some questions about the RheinKrake.

Our rider: Melanie Kamp

I am Melanie Kamp, 27 years old from Bonn, North Rhine-Westfalia. I have been working in the Purchasing department at igus GmbH for nearly 7 years while also studying Business Psychology at FOM Bonn. About two years ago, I took on the new purchasing area for the igus:bike division, giving me the opportunity of being involved in this project from its very beginnings. I am looking forward to the upcoming tour and all the experiences I will share with the team.
