Why a DNV GL type approval makes sense for electrical cables in the energy chain.

Tim Schneebeck | 3. April 2020

DNV GL is a classification society created in 2013 from a merger of Det Norske Veritas (Norway) and Germanischer Lloyd (Germany). The company assesses ships and offshore structures and issues guidelines on design and construction. DNV GL performs the role of monitoring compliance with issued regulations and assigns vessel classes to new constructions.

The company’s internal research also allows it to assess machines and products for suitability and to certify them. The colloquial term for this is “type approval”.

Certifications are especially important in the area of electrical systems on ships; they are necessary for ensuring quality and adherence to standards. For this reason, igus has qualified and certified electrical cables for use in e-chains on ships    and offshore structures in a DNV GL qualification programme that took several years – the only manufacturer in the world to do this so far.

This is not certification for moving cables generally, such as simple bending motion, but for cables in continuous movement in e-chains. The requirements for cables with this type of motion are different and require completely different construction and material designs. This makes igus the only company in the world with approval from a classification society for cables used in e-chains on ships or offshore structures. The product range encompasses all common types, from control cables to fibre optic cables to motor cables.

The unique igus cable approval system from DNV GL offers the user the following:

– a facilitated selection of cables without addition approval effort

– an extremely high degree of reliability in the increasing number of automation processes on ships, thanks to comprehensive approval and testing steps

– possible cost reduction, since most classification societies recognize each other’s approvals

– greater flexibility thanks to a large selection of more than 300 different cable types with DNV GL approval

– very short delivery times, since these types are available from stock with no minimum order
