igus® tries always and anywhere to create the components in a modular way. Each product should fit to the other product within the igus product range.
The same should be for the pikchain®. That’s the reason why we improved the pikchain®-drive.
Instead of one single main rear sprocket with a certain diameter we changed to multiple, smaller sprockets.
The inconvenience of a single rear sprocket: The diameter defines the diameter of the pikchain®. If you need a different diameter for the pikchain®, you also need a new rear sprocket, and this new rear sprocket also has to fit to the pitch of the pikchain®. Too complicated and too inflexible.
We are now very flexible with the new arrangement of the smaller sprockets. With only one type of sprocket, we can design more or less any diameter of the pikchain®. And of course it fits also to the pikchains® pitch.

Can you imagine that! A pikchain®, mounted on side, axis distance 35 meters and a height of 400 mm for the c-chain? No?
We do! But we have tested it before to be sure! See video.
You see, that this project has nothing to do with our tiny show pikchain®, which we have presented this year during so many trade shows. But the functional principle is absolutely the same.
We combine a slip ring/rotary union with an energy chain, which can now run, endless and continuously and which is connected to the conveyor chain, to say pikchain®. This principle works with small or big chains from igus®, or in this case for size XXL. Basically, any chain from igus can become a c-chain and so an important component for the pikchain®.

Since 18 months two trade show pikchains® from us are running tirelessly on different national and international trade shows, without any failures and without
considerable wear. Thousands of kilometres have been achieved already.
But: We want to know all the facts and so we did some tests. Result:
The picture shows the pikchain® running over/under the rear sprocket. This is the moment when the pikchain® experiences the highest load.
The pikchain® lasts (for ever)
Yes, let’s talk about air, pressure, vacuum and I would like to go back to my previous article: “Vacuum on, vacuum off”.
Again and again I hear the question: I have a pikchain® with for instance 30 suction cups. So, I need also 30 air hoses, right!? But how do I get the 30 hoses in my e-chain® and also in my pikchain®. There is no space for 30 hoses! What can I do?
Basically there are two ways to produce vacuum: Either you produce the vacuum via air pressure and venturi valve or via a vacuum pump which is located outside of the pikchain®
For both cases you may have the question: 30 suction cups = 30 air hoses? The answer is NO!!
You can manage both systems with one single vacuum hose. For that, you need a bus system, an energy supply (cable) (12 to 24 Volt), a couple of slaves and control air valves and/or venturi valves. Anyway, you only need one hose together with an intelligent (Bus System) control system. Of course, due to the required vacuum the hoses can be very thick. But even for this problem we have solutions ready for you.
Think about it. The answer is not blowing in the wind!
